Matt Nicholls is a story-teller from Melbourne, creator of Boy In A Box Productions, and overseer of Indie Comics Previews. Primarily, he’s a writer, creator of several great titles, and our next subject in our independent creator interviews. He has held booths at both Oz Comic Con and Supanova in Melbourne, the Sticky Institute’s zine fair, ZICS, and has successfully funded Kickstarter projects for his book “Don’t Shut The Door“. So when it comes to writing, we’ll show you what Matt’s got.
Matt was in Brisbane for the ZICS, the Zine and Independent Comic Symposium, event over the weekend of the 20th and 21st August 2016. He was a special guest flown in to do a panel for the event called “Health, Creating and Me”. It was an event full of fun, great art, greater artists and a whirlwind of activity. Which is why after the event, I emailed Matt to see if he could do an interview with MCA Studios about his writing and what he’s been up to.
1. Please tell us a little about how you got into writing.
I started writing songs when I was about fifteen and haven’t stopped. I have also written a couple of movie scripts. Once my children were born my wife and I had less time for music so I started writing comics as it’s a lot easier to make a comic than a movie, plus comics are more versatile.
2. Are you a full-time or part-time writer? How does that affect your writing?
I’m a part time writer. I was working full time but am at home now, so I am working on becoming a full time writer.
3. What has been your most enjoyable title to write to date?
My latest, which was my first children’s book, was a lot of fun to write. The inspiration behind Don’t Shut the Door were children so it was great for them as they say it’s about them, which gives me joy.
4. Are you proud of one work in particular?
I’m proud of all my work. But if I had to chose one…. my special baby is definitely Collateral – Dear John. I’ve only released four issues to date but I’ve written a lot more than that. I’m looking forward to getting some more issues out into the world.
5. How do you find time to write?
When I was employed full time I would write on the train to and from work. Now that I’m home it’s a matter of making time not finding it.
6. What advice would you give to new writers just starting out?
Write. Just write. Write everything down. Write everyday. The only way to improve is to do.
Matt started Indie Comic Previews to showcase independent comics, and is a great source to find independent comics, follow your favourite independent artists and when they will be coming out with a new publication. I highly recommend adding them to your Facebook likes, and your favourites folder on your browser.
Boy In a Box Productions is a Melbourne based independent publishing house, and Matt’s publications can be found at his Big Cartel store, (including Collateral: Dear John, which I’m kicking myself for not buying when he was here in Brisbane).
